Fight Off Your Writer’s Block

Writer’s block can be a pain in the a**, especially when you want to write but you don’t know how to get rid of it. Below is eight solutions to defeat writer’s block and get back to writing your story!

Change the Weather

Have you ever read a story where the weather had dramatically changed? Me too. But now I’m always wondering if the writer had writer’s block at that part. I can’t promise this will always work but at least changing the weather will get some words flowing.

Set it Aside

Every writer should set their work aside at some point in the day and not even think about it. Getting out of your own head for an hour or two, or even longer, is a great way to re-energize your brain. But, before you leave it, you should make sure that you stopped in the middle of a sentence. This way when you get back to it you’ll have to finish that sentence, getting you writing right off.

Write Now, Revise Later

I was once having immense trouble with the begin of a chapter of a WIP. I knew where I wanted the chapter to go, I just didn’t know where to start. But then I wrote “worst version” above my page and I basically shoved those words onto that paper. I felt good afterwards because I had my chapter written and as soon as I was done I was able to come up with a way better beginning. Don’t be afraid to write the worst version ever because you will always go back and revise it later.

Suddenly!

Have you ever written the most craziest thing? Well, that is one way to fight of writer’s block. Write the most bizarre thing that could apply to your story because it can get your pencil flying, and you know that you’ll go back and fix it later anyway. Who knows?? It can get so good, you might decide to keep it.

Date Your Story

Before I had written my story Tacenda, which you can read on Wattpad, I had decided to write out the major highlights that I wanted to happen. I was surprised how easily that story came along. It was the fastest story I had ever written, even though it still took me about two years to get everything on paper. But the thing that made it flow so easily was that I dated the events that should happen in the story like I date the events that’s going on in my own life.

Reread

After setting my story aside for a month or longer- mostly because I just don’t feel like writing- I usually reread the entire thing, getting me pumped up to start writing again. Now this doesn’t always work, but most of the time it gets a pencil in my hand and a smile on my face.

Do a Little Workout

When ever you feel writer’s block starting to come on this is the time to set your story aside for only a short period of time. It can be for however long you want but in between the time a little exercising or stretch is the perfect thing to get your brain running again. When you sit back down with your story in front of you, you will find yourself freshed and energized for the next however many hours you’ll want to write.

Write The Big Ending

Referring to my story Tacenda again, the thing that had me so motivated to finish it was that I had already written the ending. When I had actually gotten to the end it flew by so fast, because basically all I had to do was rewrite the last chapter with a few tweaks here and there. Even though I stayed up until two or three in the morning, I stayed up for the satisfaction of hitting that period key for the final time.

I love writing and I love sharing experiences and listening to experiences. I enjoy bringing the hidden write out of people and encourage them to go for what they want, that's why I started this blog.
