Flawed Characters Are Fun Characters

Is it just me or is it fun picking out flaws for your character? Especially when the flaws go really deep into their personality, like self-centered, or manipulative. Or maybe when they constantly attract bad things and people to them and they don’t understand what it is they are doing wrong. Maybe the truly fun part is having your characters try their best to overcome those flaws.

Below is a list of great flaws for your characters to overcome… or not. Also with the flaws will be the opposite trait, or the positive feeling that your character is lacking or looking for.

  • Angry — Love, Peaceful, Forgiving
  • Annoyed — Acceptance
  • Antagonistic — Harmonious, Cooperative
  • Anxiety — Trust, Reassured, Calm
  • Apprehensive — Confident, Calm, Trusting, Reassured
  • Arguementive — Agreeable
  • Arrogant — Humble, Loving, Teachable, Modest
  • Ashamed — Self-forgiveness, Repentant, Pleased, Merciful
  • Avoiding — Participating, Comfortable
  • Awkward — Graceful, at ease, Flowing
  • Bad attitude — good natured
  • Bad luck (it’s my) — life works for me
  • Bashful — forward
  • Beaten Down — Lifted up, invincible
  • Befuddled — collected, composed, congruent
  • Belittled — praised, valued
  • Bitter — forgive, joyful, sweet
  • Blaming — forgive, allowing
  • Boastful — sincere, humble
  • Boisterous — quiet, tranquil, serene
  • Bragging — Humble, reserved, unassuming
  • Brutual/ish — kind, gentle, sensitive
  • Burdened — relieved, light, carefree
  • Careless — careful, accurate, thoughtful
  • Chaotic — organized, purposeful, resolute
  • Childish — mature, wise, understanding
  • Chronic — curable, temporary
  • Clingy — letting go, releasing relaxed
  • Close-minded — open-minded, embracing truth
  • Competitive — Cooperative, alliance
  • Compulsive — relaxed rational
  • Conceited — humble, caring
  • Condemning — forgive, Merciful
  • Confused — clear-headed, enlightened
  • Controlling–letting go, releasing, allowing, flow with
  • Cowardly — heroic, brave, fearless
  • Critical — forgive, accept, allow
  • Death wish — Love life, enthused, joyous
  • Deceitful — honest, integrity, honorable
  • Defensive — assertive, appropriately aggressive, forgive
  • Demanding — flexible, yielding, pleasant
  • Denial — responsible, accountable, owning
  • Destructive — constructive, elevates, benevolent
  • Devilish — angelic, kind, virtuous
  • Disappointing — pleasing, encouraged, satisfied
  • Disappear (could) — face the issue, be present in the moment
  • Distrust — forgive, trust, loyal, reliable
  • Doormat (like a) — powerful, strong, self-sufficient
  • Egotistical — meek, humble, selfless
  • Emotional stress — emotionally stable, confident, steadfast
  • Envious — accept, Pleased for others, benevolent
  • Failure — capable, accomplished
  • Foolish — brilliant, wise, bright
  • Friendless — sought after, valued
  • Furious — calm, quiet, restrained, Peaceful
  • Greedy — unselfish, fair, giving
  • Harassed (I feel) — respected, edified treated kindly
  • Hasty — patient, cautious, wise, prudent
  • Hateful — tolerant, forgive, gracious
  • Homely — attractive, beautiful, favored
  • Indecisive — Decisive, resolute, certain, stable
  • Intense depression — enthused about living, happy to be alive
  • Jealous — love, acceptance, benevolent
  • Know-it-all — meek, unassuming, humble
  • Lazy — motivated, ambitious
  • Lustful — moral, virtuous, disciplined
  • Mischievous — harmless, safe, prudent
  • Naive — knowledgeable, understanding
  • Need for approval — approve of myself, accept self
  • Obsessive — rational, indifferent, carefree
  • Petty — forgive, love, accept
  • Phobia — Reassured, focused, fearless
  • Pressured — relieved, pacified, soothed
  • Rebellious — submissive, content
  • Spoiled — disciplined, Cooperative
  • Superior — equal to, nurturing
  • Traitor — honest, virtuous, steadfast
  • Vengeful — relenting, Loving tolerant
  • Why me — why not me? I can handle it, I have faith
  • Yearning — satisfied, content, happy, fulfilled

All these flaws can go deep into your characters past and why not be creative with it? How did your characters become like this? Where in their past were they scarred? Will they be able to identify it? If and when they do will they make the decision to overcome their challenges and faults?
